47th Rally for Peace and Disarmament Held in S. Korea

Pyongyang, July 2 (KCNA) — The 47th rally for peace and disarmament was reportedly held in front of the building of the south Korean Ministry of National Defence on June 28 under the sponsorship of the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification.

Present at the rally were members of civic and public organizations including the Reunification Square, the Association for Supporting Prisoners of Conscience of the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, the Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration and the All-Citizens Measure Committee for the Withdrawal of the Plan for the Deployment of Patriot Missiles and Building of a Citizens’ Park on Munhak Hill.

Speakers at the rally charged that the “mid-term plan for national defence” being pushed forward by the south Korean military authorities under the pretext of “cooperative self-reliant national defence” is aimed to back the realization of strategic flexibility of the U.S. troops in south Korea and introduce high-tech weapons and latest military equipment into south Korea from the United States.

They urged the Ministry of National Defence to fully reexamine the plan designed to stoke confrontation between the south and the north and block peaceful reunification and opt for peace and disarmament.

A resolution released at the rally demanded an immediate stop to the military exercises targeted against the north and the arms build-up aimed at escalating the military confrontation and tensions between the south and the north and the drop of spurious “theory of cooperative self-reliant national defence”.
