Seoul, July 10 (KCNA Correspondent) — The 10th meeting of the North-South Committee for the Promotion of Economic Cooperation was kicked off Sunday in Seoul under an agreement reached at the 15th North-South Ministerial Talks.
Present at the meeting were members of the north side’s delegation headed by Choe Yong Gon, vice-minister of Construction and Building Materials Industry who is the north side’s chairman of the committee, and its suite members and members of the south side’s delegation with Pak Pyong Won, vice-minister of Finance and Economy who is chairman of the south side of the committee, as its chief delegate and its suite members.
The heads of the delegations of both sides made speeches at the meeting.
Choe Yong Gon said at the meeting that there have been not a few difficulties and ups and downs between the north and the south over the last five years since the publication of the June 15 joint declaration, but they have promoted economic cooperation and exchange in various fields as evidenced by the project of reconnecting the rail and road links to rejoin the severed ties between the two parts of the country and the construction of the Kaesong Industrial Zone, etc. and accumulated experience in this course. What is urgently required by the developing reality is that the north and the south should pull wisdom and efforts to keep pace with the global economic development and meet many challenges on their own initiative, he noted, adding that the North-South Committee for the Promotion of Economic Cooperation is faced with an important task to settle this issue.
He went on to say: The north and the south should develop the economic cooperation into an effective undertaking common to the nation by tapping and using their resources, funds and technologies as best as possible so as to ensure the balanced development of the national economy in the basic idea of the June 15 joint declaration.
He said that the National Economic Cooperation Committee set up recently according to a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, was a practical measure for reenergizing the economic cooperation between the two sides to develop the national economy in a balanced manner.
He underlined the need for the north and the south to seek at the meeting ways of conducting the inter-Korean economic cooperation in a big way and hold an exhaustive discussion on them so as to meet the needs of the times and the nation before setting forth the north side’s proposals.
The north and the south can settle any problems smoothly if they independently solve all issues by pooling their wisdom and efforts in the interests of the nation, guided by the idea of “By our nation itself”, he said, calling on the two sides to make positive efforts to live up to the expectations of all Koreans for the balanced development of the national economy and the reunification of the country.
Pak Pyong Won recalled that the south and the north have done a lot of work to rejuvenate the economic cooperation aimed at the balanced development of the national economy and promote reconciliation and cooperation in the past in the spirit of the June 15 joint declaration.
He proposed to take the current meeting as an opportunity to reexamine and put into practice the agenda for economic cooperation which the south and the north had decided to push forward and focus the discussion on the issues of bilateral interest and have an exhaustive consultation on ways to implement them.
He proposed the items to be taken up by the meeting.
