New Kinds of Rice Bred

Pyongyang, June 28 (KCNA) — Researchers of the Rice Institute under the DPRK Academy of Agriculture have succeeded in breeding and introducing various species of rice suited to the submerged and other areas.

The newly bred species of rice are very strong in resistance to rice bacterial leaf blight, helminthosporidium leaf spot of rice and rice-plant fever that are liable to break out in the submerged land. Each species can produce 2.5-3.2 more tons of rice than others per hectare.

In particular, they can be cultivated without using vinyl sheets in the areas south of Pyongyang to economize large amount of farming materials.

They do well after other crops in paddy fields, too.

The new species have already been cultivated in a vast acreage of paddy fields throughout the country, increasing rice output without any additional investment.

They won the first place in the 21st National Festival of Science and Technology held in May.
