Paektusan Prize Sports Games Go on in DPRK

Pyongyang, February 22 (KCNA) — The Paektusan Prize Sports Games are going on in the DPRK in celebration of the Day of the Shining Star, leader Kim Jong Il’s birth anniversary (February 16).

They are bringing together more than 3 500 athletes from across the country. The athletes are competing in 11 events, including football, basketball, volleyball and speed skating.
Women’s basketball matches are drawing attention of the experts and fans.
The Pyongyang Sports Team beat the Amnokgang Sports Team on Feb. 3. The sports team of Pyongyang Medical College of Kim Il Sung University overpowered the Kigwancha Sports Team, a powerhouse, by 20-odd points.
The Kigwancha Sports Team reduced points in volleyball game with the Sobaeksu Sports Team which took the second place in the DPRK Championships last year.
Good results were also made in football, table-tennis, handball and other events.
Meanwhile, the Taesongsan Sports Team finished first in the ice hockey game held at the sports village of the area of Mt Paektu in Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province.
